Tenerife Resorts - Playa de las Americas
Wednesday, 11th November 2009
This is the best known and most popular resort in Tenerife. The resort is situated in the south of the Island and is about 9 miles from Tenerife South Airport, and is next door to the resort of Los Cristianos.
Playa de las Americas is the loudest, most vibrant, resort in Tenerife, extremely popular with younger visitors, especially the British. However, it is not just the young who flock to Playa de las Americas, many older “young at heart” visitors also make up the considerable numbers.
The resort has a mixture of natural beaches made up of dark volcanic sand and golden sandy artificial beaches. The main two beaches are Playa de la Troya and Las Cuertivals. Most beaches have a wide range of bar and restaurants nearby, as well as a huge choice of watersports.
There are many high rise hotels and apartment blocks, but the local authorities have made a concerted effort to make the resort as green as possible by planting large numbers of Palm Trees, shrubs and flower beds.
Nightlife is terrific. Most of the entertainment is centred on “The Patch” and the Veronicas and Starco areas. There are more bars, pubs, karaoke bars, and clubs than you can count, and many have live music. The frenetic entertainment goes on into the early hours. The most famous spot is probably Tramps Nightclub, located in the Starco area, which has attracted guest appearances from many top British DJ’s.
The entertainment is not just focused on the younger crowd, as there are lots of family friendly establishments around the resort.
There is an abundance of fast food outlets, including the obligatory fish and chips, but also a wide selection of excellent restaurants. The local cuisine is Canarian, and in addition there is Spanish, Tapas, Italian, French, Japanese, Greek, British, Indian, Chinese and Thai food available. There are several extremely good steakhouses and seafood restaurants.
As well as the beaches, there are lots of places to enjoy, especially for the kids. The most popular are Octopus Aquapark, with water rides and fun for kids of all ages, and a Dolphinarium. The attractions at nearby Los Cristianos are easily accessible, including the Parque las Aquillas, and the Camel Park. A new place to visit is Siam Park, near Costa Adeje, which is just a short journey away. This is a spectacular waterpark opened in 2008, and a definite must visit.
Other popular activities include safari trips, boat and fishing trips. There is go-karting for the kids, Island tours and many, many other things to so. Of course, some visitors go clubbing all night, and sun bathe on the beach all day!
