Tenerife Resorts - El Medano

El Medano is a small resort, only 4 miles from Tenerife South Airport. Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are less than 15 miles away. It is a very laid back and atmospheric little resort, a total contrast to Playa de las Americas. The little villas of Las Galletas is close by.
El Medano has favourable trade winds, and as a result is a windsurfers and kite boarders paradise. Windsurfing conditions are excellent throughout the year. There are several schools in the area, and the resort attracts enthusiasts, beginners, intermediate and experts, from all over the world. The Playa Machedo beach is the focal point for surfers, and many international competitions have been held here. Divers head for Las Galletas just a few minutes away.
For ordinary tourists, the slightly windy conditions do not pose a problem. The breezes are warm, unlike Northern Europe, and are refreshing on a hot summer’s day. There are sheltered beaches and coves, making sun bathing perfect, as well as bird watching. The beaches are made up of natural sand and extend in total to nearly two miles. The main beach is near the to the town centre, and is very popular with families, with lots of refreshments available. Nearby is the beach of La Tejita, considered by many to be the finest beach in Tenerife, and is accessible by foot. The beach is so lovely; a visitor could spend their entire holiday here. Right at the end of the beach is a sandy cove reserved for Nudist sun bathers who want to get an all over tan!
El Medano is quiet and peaceful, a perfect holiday escape from the stress of life. As with the other coastal resorts, the town has a dramatic backdrop in the form of Mount Tiede. For walkers, an excursion in the Montana Pelada and Montana Roja nature reserves is a fantastic experience. Both are accessible by foot from the town.
The town has a promenade and very attractive town square, with a small but good selection of bars and restaurants.
For visitors looking for the facilities of Playa de las Americas, a car or taxi trip will only take around half an hour. San Miguel de Abona is a ten minute drive.
